Cages

What is the EasyCage made of?

The EasyCage base, top and water bottle are composed of recyclable, BPA-free, PET plastic. The feeder is made of recyclable polypropylene.

How many mice can be housed in the EasyCage?

The EasyCage can comfortably accommodate 5 mice. With 77.5in2 (500 cm2) of floor space, the EasyCage is in accordance with The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and Directive 201/63/EU (ETS 123).

What is the suggested cage change interval for the EasyCage?

Most users perform cage changes every 14 days. Depending on how many mice are housed, cages with less than 5 mice may be able to extend use beyond 14 days.

What is the optimal temperature for storing the EasyCage?

Temperatures should not exceed 115°F / 46°C.

What is the average shelf life for caging supplies?

When kept in the original packaging and stored in optimal conditions, the average shelf life for the EasyCage is one year.

What type of filter does the EasyCage use?

We use 3 filters in our EasyCage system. One in the cage and two in the lid. All are Reemay filters.

What kind of bedding is used for the pre-bedded cage option?

For the pre-bedded EasyCage, we offer NestPaks® (¼" ALPHA-dri® or ¼" corn cob).

Can you clean the EasyCage bottoms?

The EasyCage is disposable, eliminating the need to wash or clean cage bottoms. The EasyCage was designed for one-time use.

Can I transport the EasyCage from one facility to another?

Yes. Every EasyCage can be used to transfer mice from one facility to the next. All cages disengaged from the IVC rack are not being ventilated, and care should be taken in all of these situations.

How often can you ship me my caging?

Allentown will work with our customers to create a delivery program that works best with their budget and caging needs. Deliveries can be set up on a monthly, quarterly or semiannual schedule.

In what quantities are the components sold and packaged?

Cage systems are sold in sets. Allentown sales people will have a cage calculator to help you determine appropriate order quantities.

Racks

Are there special electrical requirements for NexGen IVC racks?

NexGen IVC racks do not have special electrical requirements. They use a standard outlet.

If the facility experiences a power outage, what will happen to the rack when the power returns?

Once power is restored to your facility, the rack will automatically restart with the same settings as before.

How long can we house mice in NexGen IVC racks if there is a power outage?

This is dependent on how many mice are housed in a cage. Typically with 3-5 mice, you can keep the animals in the NexGen IVC rack/cage for 12-24 hours.

How do I clean the NexGen IVC racks?

Typically, racks are cleaned with a rack washer. However, if in accordance with your facility's Health and Safety guidelines, you may use other washing methods such as chlorine dioxide, or an alcohol-based disinfectant.

Can VHP be used to decontaminate NexGen IVC racks?

Yes. VHP and other comparable technologies can be used.

Should NexGen IVC racks be connected to the room exhaust system?

This is not necessary, but, if your facility would like the option to direct humidity and odor out, our experts in our Vivarium Design Services department can help you.

Water

What is the suggested shelf life for pre-filled water bottles?

We recommend you use your pre-filled water bottles within two years of the fill date.

What is the appropriate temperature range when storing pre-filled water bottles?

The environment should not exceed 115°F / 46°C.

Recycling

Can I recycle the whole EasyCage?

Yes. All EasyCage components (bottom, lid, water bottle and feeder) are made of 100% recyclable materials.

Where can I recycle my used EasyCages?

We recommend you check your current facility recycling program/local recycling programs to find the closest location that accepts open neck plastic containers.

Should I follow a specific process when recycling cages locally?

Before recycling, ensure EasyCage bottoms are free of bedding and water bottles are empty. Lids, filters, feeders and card holders can be recycled as is.

Does Allentown offer assistance when setting up a local recycling program?

We ask that you provide the contact information for your local recycling service and we will make arrangements from there.

If my local municipal program does not accept open neck containers, what is the next step?

If a municipal program does not have a material sorting facility, Allentown can recycle the lids/bottoms for a fee. With this option, you don't need to dump the cages prior to recycling.
